Baseball fields often have different safety requirements and arena needs compared to other sporting facilities such as basketball courts, tennis courts, and driving ranges. The most notable difference is the presence of a backstop behind home plate to protect spectators from stray balls and flying bats or sports equipment.
Backstops aren’t the only difference in baseball fields. The type of baseball field will also determine the regulation fence height. The average height for an outfield fence in major league baseball is eight feet while the normal height of a fence on a recreational field is closer to six feet.
Outfield fences are usually made from chain link with a fence cap system for safety. These fences can also include windscreens.
